When Tom was waiting for time to pass before picking up Rose, his thoughts were torn betgween his desire to join the Navy and his love for Rose, "Do I really think its fair for me to ask Rose to marry me, knowing that I will soon be joining the Navy?
Latter, when Rose said to Tom, "Penny for your thoughts, you look like you are miles away from here."
"You can really read me. I have just beem kicking around some ideas in my head that concern us, and I really need to share them with you."
"Please do Tom; you know my feelings toward you.
"Okay, I will." He pulled off the highway onto a small side road and stopped the car. Flakes of swow were hitting the windshield, droppingfrom the bellies of gray clouds. "Rose, I want you to know that i love you very much and want you to be my wife. But I need to tell you something first." Rose, surprized at this approach, had secretly been praying for him to ask her, said, "I love you too, and being your wife had been on my thoughts for some time.
Tom reached across the seat and pulled her toward him, folding her in his arms. Rose willingly went into Tom's arms, and accepted his kiss returning it with a passion she had been holding back because of a fear of letting herself go completely. Sge was to this moment, the happiest she had been for many years. "Tom, you are a wonderful man, and I have been so impressed with your caring attitude toward Jimmy and me. I feel like I am one of the luckiest girls in the world to have found you.
