"Back in the Day" is the second book in my "life series" which started with "Gibbon's Secrets," and will cover the ten year period from 1945 to 1955. I will share a young man's historical fiction experiences throughout high school, summers in-between, and four years in the Navy.
These experiences and relationships start from growing up in a small town (Curtis) in Nebraska, where a healthy atmosphere was common in the 1950's. I have elected to classify the incidents and individual characters in this story as Historical Fiction to allow the sharing of my recollection of the content and order. The dialogues used throughout the story are the types of conversations remembered by me during the time frame of the story.
Curtis is a small town in the southwestern corner of Nebraska, with a poplation in the 1,000 range during the period of time of this story.
The Nebraska School of Agriculture (NSA) was the only Ag high school in the state of Nebraska, and the high school featured in this story.
I secured historical Navy records from the National Personnel Records Center which have made it possible to create a more realistic historical timeline of "Duty Stations" and dates when earned leaves were taken. Actual information about the individual duty stations have been taken from: US Naval Training Center in San Diego CA; US Naval Air Training Center in Jacksonville, FL; US Naval Air Station in Quonset Point, RI; US Naval Air Station in Atlantic City, NJ; VC-4 Squadron at Naval Air Station in Atlantic City, NJ; and the USS Valley Forge, CVS-45 - all which have been included in this historical fiction story.
My "Time Travel Machine" has been totally reconditioned to withstand the rigors of the many trips I plan to take you on - from the first trip back to Curtis (1945 through 1949), then a short experience in college, and finally the trips covering four years in the Navy (1951-1955). Climb aboard and fasten your seat belts for a fictional trip "Back in the Day".....

Old Glory

It was January 1942, and five boys headed up the stairs to the haymow in the big red barn.  Snuggling down in the hay, the boys looked at each other, wondering who was going to start.  The cold wind whistled around the big door where the hay was lifted into the barn, causing them to snuggle deeper in the hay.

After what seemed to be forever, Bud said, “We have to make something happen here in Gibbon to help the people show total support for our guys and gals in the service.  We have our own hero, my neighbor’s son, Dale Pitke, but we need something that would bring out “Patriotism” in individuals.

Duncan stood up real excited and said, “How about rounding up some small American flags, and then march around our neighborhood showing support for our country”

Donny jumped up and said, “That’s a great idea, Duncan!  Maybe we could also suggest that everyone fly an American flag in front of their homes!”

These ideas fostered an idea called “The Flag Project” in a small town, in the middle of the country, at the start of World War II.  Five young boys inspired the small town of Gibbon to display their “Patriotism” through the flying of “Old Glory” in front of their homes; and by marching around this small town of under one thousand people with their small flags.

It may sound like a small thing, but these young Patriots were effective.

“Gibbon’s Secrets” – Information & Background

“Gibbon’s Secrets” – Information

Many of the incidences and individual characters in this story reflect the time frame of the 1940’s; so I am classifying it as a Historical Fiction novel.  Some of the names may have been purposely changed or added to the story to complete the fictional picture.
With the “Great Depression” nearing its end, and the war in Europe appearing to be getting stronger; the small town of Gibbon, in the middle of Nebraska, acquired a look of change.  The story is developed around various individuals living in this small town and how they reacted on the “Home Front” during World War II.  Even though the war was far across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, it impacted the everyday routines in Gibbon.  Newspapers and radios added to this war influence through pictures and stories which in turn were  added to Bud’s dad’s scrap books, and will appear as a “Time Line” of World War II battles and happenings at the end of each year in the story.
I am sharing my memories about growing up during the 1940’s and have included many of the everyday happenings of how it was back then in this small town in the middle of Nebraska.

“Gibbon’s Secrets” – Background

The story starts with Bud lying under a large elm tree with a full and showy form, turning the puffy clouds into animals or ships to pass the time of day, when he falls asleep.  Suddenly, he feels a sharp pain in his foot and cringes in fright when a ruggedly built man kicks him again.  The man, towering above him, is blonde, tall, and wide of shoulders.  He has arms like slabs of ham, and he has steely-blue eyes.  He reaches down to pick up Bud, who quickly rolls over and runs out of the park, across the street to his home…  This is the start of Bud’s experience with the Stranger.

The above is an example of the fictional happenings that occur in Bud’s life during the 1940’s.  You will read about typical boyhood adventures during this very important time in our United States history.  Spy’s, Boy’s playing in the “Big Red Barn”, fishing at Wood River, playing war games in the park across the street from Bud’s home (Gibbon Commandos), grade school plays, the “Flag Project”, “Scrap Drives” to help the war effort, Saving Stamps saved to buy War Bonds, Rationing (gasoline, sugar, etc), boy’s “Patriotism”, role model in the form of a Nebraska Highway Patrolman, family gatherings (Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and special occasions), are all the types of happenings and events you will be reading about in “Gibbon’s Secrets”.

In addition to the stories of “Gibbon’s Secrets” I have included the personal memories of Frank Chambers about his World War II service during the “Battle of the Bulge”.  This Postscript will contain letters to his brother Jim relative to his training while in the states, and then a Journal written by Frank developed during the “Battle of the Bulge.”  Frank served our country well, and I am proud that I can record his letters and journal as a part of my book.  Frank is an example of one of our “Ordinary Patriots,” doing his part in World War II.

Please read “Gibbon’s Secrets” and take this fictional trip back to the 40’s in this small town of Gibbon, Nebraska.  My goal is to record these bits of history for our children and grandchildren as well as the reader’s children and grandchildren even though they are Historical Fiction.  Enjoy!!

Gibbon's Secrets kindle book FREE June 8 - June 9

My book, Gibbon's Secrets, A Boy's Memories of the 40's, is now available as a kindle book on Amazon.  The link is, http://amzn.to/KQpWaV

Gibbon's Secrets: A Boy's Memories of the 40's

 "Gibbon's Secrets" is a story about 'A Boy's Memories of the 40's'.
In the story I am sharing some of the true incidences that happened to me and my four friends as we were growing up in the small town of Gibbon Nebraska. I have classified the story as fictional to give me the opening to expand my memories a bit and to add some fictional happenings to bring out the possibilities of growing up with World War II in the background.

My father, Reg Phelps, left me several scrap books containing the headlines and pictures from local newspapers about World War II. I have developed a time line of highlights from the battles for each year in the book starting in 1940 and ending in 1945.

I am Bud, the main character in the book, and you will be able to pick me out of the cover picture as the boy the 5th from the left with a jaunty straw hat. Other pictures I have included in the back of the book were actual photographs of houses and places featured in the book.

As an added feature I have included, as a Postscript, shared memories from Frank Chambers about his experience during the "Battle of the Bulge".

My friend from Gibbon, Duncan McGregor, gave me copies of various elementary school programs which I have used as part of the story. As an example: On December 15 1941 the Gibbon Grade School presented their Christmas program that they had been working on well ahead of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th. The crowd of people in attendance for this "Christmas Carol Program" started the evening with heavy hearts, but left the auditorium with smiles on their faces. They were all thanking the Lord for the innocence of these Gibbon Grade School students, and the joy they brought to everyone this night. Read and enjoy my enhanced remembrance of the 40's.

Gibbon's Secrets Snippet - Pretend time after a battle newsreel

This past weekend the five boys had been to the Saturday matinee and had seen a newsreel about a battle in the Pacific.  A boys mind can play tricks on its owner, your know!

Bud suggested they play a pretend game and tell how they would picture themselves in the battle.  "Let me start this pretend experience, by saying how I would put myself into the battle.  Here I am aboard the aircraft carrier, the "USS Lexington", and we've been involved in the battle for Guadalcanal for weeks now, and finally the Japanese have been forced to leave these islands.  Looking around at the other sailors aboard ship I am proud of how well all of them fought this battle."

Donny said, "I am aboard our destroyer the "USS John Paul Jones", and my gunnery crew have successfully protected the aircraft carrier, "USS Lexington."  Their planes have been able to carry out their mission, without a problem, against the Japanese forces on Guadalcanal."

Stanley added, "Here I am flying off of the "USS Lexington", heading for a bombing run on Guadalcanal!  I can picture the Japanese soldiers running for cover as we fly over the island.  My plane completes its mission and successfully returns to the carrier."

Wally explained his part of the battle, "Let me tell you this has been one exciting week.  First our fighter planes made a very successful attack on Guadalcanal, and now my lead plane is chasing the Japanese warships out of the area; hopefully all the way back to Japan."

Duncan detailed his battle, "It has been my honor to be chosen for this small-boat detachment.  We have been selected to be part of the mop-up forces in the Guadalcanal vicinity, and our PT boats move in so fast the slower Japanese ships don't even realize we're there until it's too late for them.  Our torpedoes are a deadly force that cripples their retreating fleet."

After awhile the boys came out of the trance and just looked at each other with grins on their faces.  Each knowing, what they had shared about their part of the battle had really happened - in their minds.

Cover Your Nut Snippet - Practical Accounting "Cover Your Nut" Rule

"Cover Your Nut" Rule

You must understand that the only reason that you are starting a business is to make money, and to do so you must have the tools to accomplish this.  "Cover Your Nut" is a general term for covering the costs and expenses of your business to make a profit, and something that is often left out in the early planning stages of a business.  In order to make money with your business, the first step should be to see at what point in time, and with what revenue, will I cover all of my costs and expenses.  The "Cover Your Nut Principle" is the most important step that you can make toward being successful in reaching that original goal for starting a business, (making money).

The term "Cover Your Nut", so the story goes..........
A peddler drove his team and wagon, full of his goods to sell, into a small Western town.  He drove his team to the front of the local hotel and seeing the Innkeeper out front of his hotel said, "I have this wagon full of goods to sell, but I ran out of money.  Would you consider letting me stay at your hotel with my promise to pay you when I sell enough of my goods?"  The Innkeeper, being a smart businessman, said, "You take that nut off of your wagon wheel, lean the wheel against the your wagon, and give me the nut.  When you have sold enough of your goods, you will "Cover Your Nut".

Gibbon's Secrets Snippet - The Big Red Barn in Winter

The winter still was holding on tight, with flakes of snow gently floating down from dark gray, puffy clouds.  The low temperatures seemed threatening to both man and beast (even boys).  Bud and his friends would seek refuge in Mr. Ross’s big red barn during the cold days of winter.  The barn’s haymow was packed high with hay, and the cows were all lined up in their stalls with their heads deep in the mangers munching on hay.

The boys walked in the barn past the stalls and in front of the mangers.  Bud stopped and said, “Alright guys, here is another secret I’ll share with you.  Take some of the pellets you see there in the manger and put them in your pocket.  The pellets will give us special powers when we are flying off of the rafters, but eating them has to be our secret.  Grown-ups and sisters just don't understand.”  Each of the boys put some of the pellets in their pockets and followed Bud up the stairs to the haymow.  Donny pulled Bud aside when they got upstairs.  “Are you sure they won’t make us sick?”  Bud said, “I’m sure, Donny. How could pressed alfalfa and molasses make you sick?”  Wally hadn’t waited.  “These pellets are great Bud, I love the way they crunch when you bite down on them.”  With that testimonial, Duncan and Stanley started chewing away on the pellets, and thinking that it was pretty neat.  The boys felt that the pellets did give them special powers, and fortunately none of them got sick.
